Background

Times change and dynamic institutions change with them. Since 1989, the Center for Aging, a recognized "center of excellence" based at UMDNJ-School of Osteopathic Medicine (UMDNJ-SOM), has served older individuals and their families, providing medical care in varied settings and offering training for health professionals of multiple disciplines.

To better meet the needs of New Jersey's aging population, the Center evolved to a new level of excellence and statewide leadership in education, research, clinical care, and community service, and public policy. In November of 2005, the Center for Aging formally became the New Jersey Institute for Successful Aging (NJISA). In making this change, we have reaffirmed our commitment to helping the growing number of older individuals in New Jersey age successfully. We acknowledge people's diverse health care needs and the different populations and cultures we serve.

More than 50 faculty, education, research, administrative and support staff work together to provide the latest in evaluation and treatment of common conditions affecting older adults. Our goal is to maintain health, promote wellness and effectively manage chronic illness or disease. Clinical faculty include geriatricians--physicians specially trained in caring for older individuals; neurologists; neuropsychologists; geropsychiatrists; nurse practitioners; and social workers.
