Geriatric
Dentistry Fellowship
Overview of Training:
The geriatric dental
fellowship program is jointly
administered by the UMDNJ-School
of Osteopathic Medicine's
New Jersey Institute for
Successful Aging and the
UMDNJ-New
Jersey Dental School.
Throughout the two year
experience, integrated learning
between medical and dental
fellows in the didactic
and clinical settings is
a hallmark of the program.
The ambulatory nature of
dental practice requires
that adaptations to clinical
experiences are made to
ensure integrated learning
and care of elderly patients
in varied settings.
Dental fellows attend didactic
sessions and weekly multidisciplinary
team conferences with geriatric
medical fellows. The two-year
program is based on the
integrated approach to learning.
Clinical experiences within
the ambulatory and long
term care setting provide
opportunities for dental
fellows to work directly
with geriatricians, medical
fellows and members of the
multidisciplinary team in
the assessment of the elderly
patient. Dental fellows
have regularly scheduled
ambulatory dental clinic
days, permitting longitudinal
experiences in assessing
dental needs and delivering
comprehensive dental care.
A full range of oral health
services is provided to
ambulatory geriatric patients
in the University Dental
Centers in southern New
Jersey. Exposure to specialty
and subspecialty training
in oral diagnosis and radiology,
prosthodontics, oral surgery,
and other areas is available
at the main campus of UMDNJ-New
Jersey Dental School in
Newark.
Research mentoring
and dental didactic is provided
by dental faculty, who offer
a broad array of interests
and expertise. Opportunities
for specialized dental research
or clinical activities are
available through the Department
of Institutional Research
and the Oral Implantology
Center, also located on
the Newark campus. All geriatric
dental fellows are required
to complete a research project
of publishable quality by
the end of the two year
program.
