ORANJ
BOWL is a survey research program where participants
are assessed annually for many years. The goal
of the research is to learn what determines
who ages successfully and healthfully while
understanding reasons for any differences that
might exist between groups of people.
Research participants
include community-dwelling New Jersey residents
who are between 50 and 74 years of age. Only
one member of any household is eligible to join
the study. Selected households are contacted
by random digit dialing methods to ensure that
ORANJ BOWL participants are statistically representative
of
New Jersey 's population.

During the survey interview, many measures
common to scientific research on aging are collected.
These include measures of physical health, functional
capacity, emotional health, well-being, health behaviors,
and health conditions as well as
lifestyle, financial, and demographic information.
|
ORANJ BOWL is also a panel, a collection
of people who can be sorted on the basis of health
conditions, health practices, or other personal characteristics
and then – amazingly fast and inexpensively – invited
to participate in additional research studies.
As a panel, ORANJ BOWL allows scientists
to examine important aging and health issues more
effectively and less expensively than ever before.
It is a tool for quickly and easily identifying and
inviting eligible people to participate in valuable
research, thus spreading the costs of scientific sampling
and data collection over many studies. In this way,
the ORANJ BOWL panel makes it possible for scientists
to do more and better research, contributing to knowledge
about the aging process at an accelerated pace.
For these reasons, those who participate
in ORANJ BOWL research as part of our team are Big
Game players, true champions for successful aging,
who make all of us winners.
